This Week in Review:

Dear Families,

“When December comes, can “The Nutcracker” be far behind?  No, it can’t—-not in America, anyway”

            ~Robert Gottlieb~

Yes, of course we are all enjoying the gaiety of the Christmas season.  Our classrooms have Advent wreaths in place, our teachers are beginning to decorate with wreaths, holly, Christmas trees and naturally…… the elf!  Our halls are alive with the sound of music, thanks to Fr. Kareem who practices with the students after school.

Yet, this is a school and so reading, writing and arithmetic are still very much a part of the school day.  I was invited to Mrs. Cucuzza’s kindergarten class yesterday and the children enthusiastically read to me.  They were so proud of themselves and I was so proud of them!  It is refreshing to see students truly embrace a love for learning!

Our 4th graders enjoyed a class trip to see “The Grinch.”  Following that the students then completed a written reflection on the true meaning of the Christmas season.  Their teachers, Mrs. Perich and Ms. Donnelly stated that the children’s responses confirmed that they truly grasped the meaning of this spiritual holiday.

The 6th grade students in Mrs. Hollywood’s ELA class have been working on Christmas stories. The students collaborated in small groups, chose a Christmas theme and created a story.  The students used Google Slides on their Chromebooks and added animations and pictures.  The students are looking forward to sharing these stories with the Kindergarten classes on December 19th

Ms. Geraghty and I were invited into Mrs. Dentini’s 5th grade class this week to observe students individually present their expertise in sports, music, baking and arts and crafts.  This was the culmination after the students wrote narratives to develop experiences using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.        Let me tell you ……there is some real talent here at AES!!!!!!

Week 1 of Advent concluded with the prayer of Hope read to the children every day. The prayer for Week 2, that will be shared with the students, is entitled Peace.  Additionally, please remember to go to mass tomorrow in observance of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which is interestingly a public holiday in Italy and schools and most businesses are closed.

Keep the magic of this holiday alive this week-end by sharing the story of Father Christmas that I am including in the attachments. I hope you and your family enjoy it!
