This Week in Review:

Dear Families,

The highlight of this week was our “Spectacular Halloween Carnival” hosted by our 8th grade students and their wonderful parents!  Each class enjoyed 40 minutes participating in games and activities that were fun for all.  This festive event culminated with our Halloween parade in our schoolyard.

Did you know Halloween actually has its origins in the Catholic Church?  Halloween falls on the last day of October because the Feast of All Saints or “All Hallows”, falls on November 1st.  All Saints Day was given a special vigil Mass the night before (October 31st), which led to that date being regarded by Catholics as a “holy evening”.  The word “Halloween” is a shortening of the phrase   “All Hallows Eve.”

I would like all parents to be informed that we value both educational and social/emotional development at AES and we therefore incorporate a specific value into our religious education program each month.  Our value for October was respect and our teachers stressed this in observing interactions among students.  Beginning in November, our value of the month will be docility.  The question students will be asked to ponder is, “How does listening to others help you to grow?”  Fr. Kareem will be visiting classes to support us in solidifying and incorporating these values into the daily lives of our children.

**Please note ……THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE ON THE NOVEMBER CALENDAR.  PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES ARE SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 20th FROM 1:00-3:00 and 5:00-7:00. THE WEBSITE CALENDAR HAS BEEN UPDATED TO REFLECT THIS TIME CHANGE.**

On Friday, teachers participated in a Professional Development Day at St. Barnabas School in the Bronx while our 8th graders sat for the TACHS Exam.  I am certain that they did very well!

Reminder…. daylight savings time ends Sunday, November 3rd, at 2:00am At that time clocks will fall back one hour to 1:00am.  Therefore, drivers need to adjust and compensate for less light and possible poor weather conditions.  Kindly keep this in mind when driving your children to and from school.  Let’s keep our children safe at all times.
